The Penguin Awards 1998

Best Reactions After Seeing Their Picture award

Eugenia Kuznetsova when I gave her the infamous 'Caught Coning on Camera' picture. She was like, "Oh noooooooo!!!!!!"

Boris Pilkin when I gave him the picture where he is being smooched on both sides by the Uzbeks. He held his hands to his heart in a warm romantic gesture.

Sergei Kharkov when I asked him to autograph the picture where he was goofing off in Lausanne. His expression actually was more like "GAUGH!" than anything.

Dina Kochetkova when I gave her a photo of herself, Oksana Fabrichnova and Ivan Ivankov at Japan Juniors. She laughed and seemed to enjoy it!

Stuffed Penguin Recipients award

Eugenia Kuznetsova and Inga Shkarupa.

The "It's a Strategy Thing" award

Having only Svetlana Khorkina perform all apparatus during team to allow her to be in the AA. I think Kuznetsova could have made it too. Anyways, Svetlana takes on the challenge, blows her second AA vault, then comes back to win the AA. Yay!

Elena Grosheva and friends having aerobics fun during the opening ceremonies.

The "Goat" award

Alexei Nemov and Dmitri Lvov during men's team. Both stumbled and fell a few times during key phases of the competition, putting the hurt on their Russian teammates. The new guy, whom I never heard of before (Martine??) was actually OK!

The "I Bombed on My Premier Event" award

Jani Tanskannen. World HB champ falls on his EF routine and places 7th.

The "Guy With Skinnier Legs Than Me!" award

Eric Poujade of France. No wonder he does so well on pommel horse!

The "Got Screwed" award

Inga Shkarupa on EF FX. OK, she may not have had a chance at medalling, but I still think she was scored a little low. However, I have been told that she deserved her score. Oh well.

Eugenia Kuznetsova on EF UB. Did a fairly clean routine with cool tricks but placed 7th! The fans were not pleased! However, I have been told that she deserved her score. Oh well.

The "Trying Not to Seem Short" award

All the female gymnasts wearing platform shoes. OK, OK, it may actually be the latest fashion craze, but these gymnasts are now using it to gain a few inches in the social world.

Train cabins were spartan, but better than anticipated!
Elvire Teza doesn't look a gift horse in the mouth!

The "Pictures I Should Have Taken" award

Valeri Belenki hugging a lady so hard that she fell and broke a wine glass (previously awarded).

Ioannis Melissanidis getting yelled at (also previously awarded).

Some coach or official that was passed out face down in the hotel lobby during the women's banquet party. What was funnier was the other coach or official who was heaving the guy's back like they do in the cartoons when someone nearly drowns!

The 'That Wasn't as Bad as I Thought it Would Be' award

The 8 hour train ride to Moscow between the men's and women's competitions. I envisioned a situation like in India with dozens of people hanging off the side of the train. Or maybe something like Dr. Zhivago. But we went first class and it was surprisingly pleasant. I am still glad I slept through most of it though, and I could NOT see myself taking a 14 day trip on it.

The Class Clowns award

Photographers Dave Black and Eileen Langsley. When these two get together, watch out!

The "Back in the Saddle Again" award

Ioannis Melissanidis - It was great to see him come back strong on vault with a yurchenko double back somersault (I think) and win floor EF. Especially after his rather dubious performance last year in SUI.

The "Biggest Miscalculation" award

The weather. Everyone on the IG Tour thought it would be cold and snowy, but it was in the high 50's and 60's almost every day! Just enough to make you sweat. Grrr! I brought all those thermals and jackets for nothing!

The "Hyperactive" award

Adriana Crisci (ITA). She just wouldn't sit still in the lobby. A tiny dynamo.

A definite contrast in leotard styles!

The "Caught with Huge Plates of Food in the Elevator" award

Nikolai Krukov.

The "Let's Practice Turns in the Elevator" award

Anna Kovaleva.

The "Bad Way to Finish Off a Meet" award

Ilya Georgadze (GEO), PB EF - Falls several times, probably due to an injury, and doesn't even wait to see his score. Just packs up and leaves all by himself. Hmmmmm. He ends up with a 6.500. Poor dude!

The "How I wish, how I wish you were here!" award

Ivan Ivankov. Current World Champion was resting from competition.

Marius Urzica. Pommel horse wizard was injured.

Yelena Produnova. Also injured. Was sent to the US for a pro gymnastics meet.

And of course, Roza!

The "Abs of Steel" award

Eugenia Kuznetsova
