1997 Worlds-Lausanne, Switzerland

Teams that impressed me the most:

Women - (Tie)UKR and UZB: No Lilia or Karpenko, but Tyryk, Teslenko, Sheremeta and Shkarupa all competed counting all of their scores and came in 4th! Yay! Chussy was not there due to injury, but the VERY young UZB girls came in 12th and sent three to the AA! Had Chussy been there, they would have probably easily broke the top 10! And Chussy would have easily gotten into AA and EFs. As it was, however, the UZB women were pleased as punch with their team performance! Go Svetlana Kuznetsova!

Men - CUB: They had big time moves and strength, but just need the polish. I was most impressed by Eric Lopez Rios who went on to the AA and placed 8th!! They may be the ones to watch in the future!

Most disappointing teams:

Women - Belarus: Hands down! :^( They all seemed lethargic, with watered down routines. I think they could have been 6th if they wanted to.The most disappointing female gymnast was Piskun. She just had a bad meet entirely! Poor girl :^(

Men - UKR: Must have attached a fuse to themselves and lit it! Self destruction! Male gymnast- Zhang Jinjing: My darkhorse for AA, but he blew it.

Highway robbery award

Dmitri Karbanenko(FRA): I (and many others there) think he should have medaled in AA and thought he was better than Nemov in FX finals. And not just because he was local favorite either!

Kui Yuanyuan on beam finals. Just the difficulty alone was amazing, very slight bobbles and a hop on the dismount aside.

Goofy new rule award

What's up with this no tie thing???? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of new life????

"You're kicked off the team!" award

Elena Grosheva: I think she took a seat on ALL her vaults! (Both prelims and team finals). Fell on prelim FX and was very shaky on beam. Did somewhat better on those two events during team. Leonid was not pleased though. I hope she can redeem herself somehow!

The "I'm too sexy for my shirt" award

Ivan Ivankov and Jani Tanskanen. Also some Italian gal who unabashedly changed clothes right there on the floor sidelines!

The "Wow! I didn't know you were so short!" award

Everyone!! Except for the "Wow! You're tall!" award winner: Jani Tanskanen(FIN). They had to put shims under the HB apparatus for his routines and he still almost touched the floor!

The "Wow! I don't know you were so short *AND* skinny award

Svetlana Khorkina. Close second to Anastasia Dzundziak(UZB).

"Most painful move" award

KAZ girl who hyperextended both knees on her UB dismount on her first rotation, knocking KAZ out of team qualification. Runner up to the LAT girl who dove headfirst into the block on her first vault. I'm sure glad she didn't do her second!

The "Most fearsome and unforgiving judge" award

My old male gymn idol, Li Ning as head vault judge.

Team that has a looooooooong way to go award

Saudi Arabia: They reminded me of me on the pommel horse! (*shudder!*). No wait!! They were better! Kudos to them for showing up and playing with the big boys though!

The "I should have set the uneven bars farther apart" award

Kathleen Kern(GER). Hits her feet TWICE on the lower bar and falls TWICE on her release moves during prelims. She kind of had a bad meet overall.

Friendliest gymnast

Ruth Moniz! Just say 'Hi!'

The Kim Gwang Suk award

Un-Hui Sok(PRK). OK, maybe she is 16 years old (by the Chinese calendar!:^)

"Most unusual warm up spotting pair" award

Leonid Arkayev spotting Yvonne Tousek(CAN), who is a protege of former Soviet coach Elvira Saadi.

"That's why women's leotards have LONG sleeves!" award

Adrienn Varga. Big strong burly forearms!

Caught eating an ice cream cone award

Eugenia Kuznetsova. Bad girl! J/K!

Raciest street clothes award

Eugenia Kuznetsova. Black leather shorts and top. Baaaaaad girl! J/K!

The "I can't get that STUPID music out of my head!!" award

The women's march in music. AAAAAAUGH! Runner up: the medal ceremonies march in music. AAAAAAAUGH!!!

Press Queen of the competition floor award

Legendary photographer Eileen Langsley had complete freedom, roaming the floor to capture more arresting images! Kind of neat to see her at work!
